Know Your Worth: Moscow Edition

Following the success of the seminar held in Saint Petersburg in September 2016, we decided to organize another Know Your Worth: Understanding Marketing and Negotiation for Interpreters seminar in Russia, and so on 4 – 5 February 2017 we welcomed participants from Russia and the UK to Moscow.

It was the second time that the seminar was held in a two-day format, and, just as with the seminar in Saint Petersburg, the new format proved to be the perfect arrangement to allow for a deep and detailed discussion of each of the seminar’s two main subjects: marketing, and negotiating, as well as such topics as branding, pricing, and client relationships.

This format gave our participants more time to focus on each of the main topics, and to discuss the many challenges that we, as freelancers, must face on a daily basis. It also allowed us to cover more case-studies, looking at real-life examples not only from the interpreting world, but also from other – sometimes surprisingly similar – professions. And this time we were also able to devote more time to looking into how the interpreting profession was perceived from the outside, all in order to better understand our clients.

One of the main features of the seminar is, traditionally, the atmosphere we try to create to encourage our participants to take an active part in the discussion, sharing their personal experience and exchanging ideas on how best to implement the new tools and techniques in their work.

We also like to see our participants brainstorm some of the more challenging cases together, as this often leads to them finding new and exciting solutions to different marketing and negotiating problems. And we were not disappointed.

And this photo here is just to show you what happens w_20170205_195342hen you put up a sign in a hallway covered from top to bottom in graffiti. With the legendary “Odd” Apartment from Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita just one floor above, it comes as no surprise that the place has become a place of worship and self-expression for thousands of the great writer’s fans of different ages and varying artistic ability.

But graffiti aside, we could not have wished for a better place to hold our seminar. History, art (including some very modern additions), and great style all came together to give us a unique atmosphere, making the two days we spent learning about marketing and negotiating not only incredibly useful, but also great fun.

Which, we firmly believe, is the best way to learn.

Know Your Worth Seminar in St. Petersburg

In September 2016, the Know Your Worth: Understanding Marketing and Negotiating for Interpreters seminar was held for the first time ever in a two-day format in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

This format meant that we were able to dedicate an entire day to each of the two topics of Marketing, and then another one to Negotiating, giving us more time to focus on each of the two subject, and to discuss the many challenges that we as freelancers must face on a daily basis. It also allowed us to cover more case-studies, looking at the examples not only from the interpreting world, but also from other – sometimes surprisingly similar – professions. One of the main features of this seminar, which was also made possible by its new format, was that we were able to have a very active discussion, sharing experience, raising concerns, and exchanging ideas on how best to implement the new tools and advice.

Know Your Worth in Cologne

In February 2016 a one-day Know Your Worth: Understanding Marketing and Negotiating for Interperters seminar was held in Cologne.

The format included half a day of Marketing and half a day of Negotiating training, complete with case studies and networking opportunities.

Interpreters for Interpreters AIIC Workshop in Cologne

In September 2015 the German region of AIIC organized an “Interpreters for Interpreters” event in Cologne to bring together newcomers to the profession as well as colleagues with years and decades of experience in the field of conference interpreting. During the workshop, Julia Poger gave a taster presentation for her Know Your Worth seminar, focusing on Services Marketing and looking at the topic comparing other – sometimes surprisingly similar – professions to interpreting.

Cambridge Conference Interpretation Course

The Marketing and Negotiating workshop has a been an indispensable part of the Cambridge Conference Interpretation Course (CCIC) since 2002.

img_4186-ccicThe Cambridge Conference Interpretation Course (CCIC) has run annually since 1985. It is a unique, high-level, specialised training course carefully tailored to the needs of experienced practicing conference interpreters. The CCIC format is at once intensive yet relaxed, and demanding yet friendly, and the Course is centred on teaching simultaneous interpretation from an array of general and technical speeches delivered by video, specialist guest speakers and members of the teaching faculty.

Apart from extensive training, practice, and coaching in professional simultaneous interpretation techniques, the Course programme features daily specialised additional training workshops covering, inter alia, on-sight translation, “B” language strategies, working from and preparing texts, booth & stress management, marketing & negotiation, AIIC, International Institutions, and interpreting approaches to Shakespeare, the Bible, and Latin.

Just like the Know Your Worth seminars, the Marketing and Negotiating workshops at the Cambridge Conference Interpretation Course are aimed at helping interpreters improve their relationships with clients, negotiate higher fees, and gain a better understanding of the interpreting market in general. The workshop focuses on key concepts such as branding, selling, client relationships, pricing, and negotiating, all illustrated with real-life examples that make it considerably easier to understand the subject and later implement the new tools and information, all of which makes the Marketing and Negotiating workshop a highly valuable asset to the course.

The CCIC teaching faculty comprises respected and highly experienced interpreters from a variety of backgrounds, ranging from the freelance market on both sides of the Atlantic to staff interpretation for International Institutions. Many are former or current chief interpreters.  Most work bi-actively, and are long-standing members of examining boards for, and teach on a regular basis at, a range of internationally recognised interpreting schools. All work in such venues as the ECJ, EU, NATO, OECD and UN.
